A car purchase agreement is the only document that legally proves the transaction between buyer and seller. In this guide — what to include, a free template, additional protection clauses, and the most common mistakes buyers make in Latvia.
Contents
1. 📋 Why you need a proper agreement
Thousands of used car transactions happen in Latvia every year — and a significant portion end in disputes. An incomplete or improperly drafted agreement can cost thousands of euros and months of litigation.
A good purchase agreement is not a formality — it's your main protection instrument. It defines exactly what you're buying, at what price, and in what condition the car is being handed over.
2. 📝 What to include in the agreement
Below — a complete list of mandatory and recommended fields for a car purchase agreement in Latvia.
| Field | Information | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer details | Full name, personal ID, registered address, phone | ✅ |
| Seller details | Full name, personal ID, registered address, phone | ✅ |
| Car make and model | Full name, e.g.: BMW 320d xDrive | ✅ |
| Year of manufacture | First registration or production year | ✅ |
| VIN number | 17-character unique identifier | ✅ |
| Registration number | Latvian or foreign license plates | ✅ |
| Odometer reading | Mileage in km at time of signing | ✅ |
| Purchase price | In numbers and words, EUR | ✅ |
| Date and place | Date and city/municipality of signing | ✅ |
| Signatures | Both parties' signatures on each copy | ✅ |
| Engine size/type | E.g.: 2.0 diesel, 1.6 petrol | 📌 |
| Transmission type | Manual/automatic/DSG/CVT | 📌 |
| Color | Body color (important for matching registration docs) | 📌 |
| Known defects | Detailed list of defects | 📌 |
| Additional equipment | Trim level, winter tires, etc. | 📌 |
✅ = mandatory, 📌 = highly recommended
3. 📄 Agreement template (copyable)
Below — a ready-to-use car purchase agreement template you can use as a basis for your transaction. Customize the field contents.
💡 Tip: Always fill in the "KNOWN DEFECTS" section — even if everything is fine, write "No known defects". An empty field can be interpreted ambiguously.
4. 🔒 Additional protection clauses
You can add extra clauses to the basic agreement for greater buyer protection.
🔧 Time-limited warranty
If the seller is a business (car dealer), you can agree on a warranty period.
📋 Mileage confirmation
Seller's liability for the stated mileage.
🚫 Right of withdrawal
Option to cancel the deal within a set period if hidden defects are found.
💰 Advance payment terms
If the transaction involves installments or an advance.
5. ❌ Common mistakes
Unchecked VIN number
VIN in the agreement doesn't match the VIN on the car body. Always verify physically and compare with registration documents.
Lowered price in agreement
Sellers offer to write a lower price "for tax purposes". Never agree — in a dispute, you can only recover the amount stated in the agreement.
Empty defects field
Unfilled "known defects" section. The seller can claim they informed verbally. Always document in writing.
No mileage recorded
Without a recorded mileage in the agreement, there's no basis for odometer fraud claims.
Identity mismatch
Seller's personal ID doesn't match the car owner in registration docs. Verify the seller is the legal owner.
Single copy only
Only one copy of the agreement, taken by the seller. Always prepare 2-3 copies with original signatures.
6. ✍️ Checklist before signing
Before signing — verify everything with this checklist.
Pre-signing checklist:
⚠️ Warning: Never sign an agreement in a rush or in the dark. If the seller is pressuring you — that's a red flag. A good deal can wait.
7. 📬 What to do after signing
After signing the agreement, you have 10 business days to re-register the car in your name at CSDD.
Get OCTA insurance
Mandatory third-party liability insurance. Compare prices across multiple portals — the difference can be up to 50%.
Pay the road tax (TEN)

After re-registration, you'll receive a new registration document with your details. License plates usually stay the same.
