This is an orientation page, not one long article. Below you will find the buying journey split into four steps as cards — find a car, check the history, work out the costs and handle registration. Each card opens a tool or a deep guide about exactly that step. If you are just starting, work through them in order from step one; if you have already found a specific car, jump straight to the history check and the checklist before meeting the seller.

🔍 Step 1 — where and how to search

Most used cars in Latvia are sold on SS.lv, but browsing them one by one is slow. autopase.lv aggregates the market in one place with filters for make, price, year, fuel and mileage, shows price history and a deal score so you can see what is genuinely good value. 🔎 Step 2 — check the history before you meet

Before you drive out to view a car, check the VIN and CSDD data: mileage history, any recalls, a lien or seizure, and the number of owners. A wound-back odometer and a hidden accident history are the most common problems in the used market, and you can largely uncover them from home. If the data does not match the listing, or the seller refuses to give the VIN, that is a warning sign in itself. A history check costs a little but protects you from a mistake worth thousands of euros.

🧰 Step 3 — work out the real costs

The price in the listing is not the final amount. On top of it you have to budget for CSDD registration fees, OCTA insurance and the annual operation tax, and if the car is brought in from abroad, also transport and import costs. That way you avoid unpleasant surprises after the purchase.

📋 Step 4 — inspection, meeting and registration

When you meet in person, use the checklist to systematically go over documents, body, interior, mechanics and the test drive — that is how you avoid missing an expensive defect. Compare the VIN in the documents with the VIN on the car and make sure the seller is the actual owner. After the deal, sign a purchase agreement and remember: ownership must be re-registered at CSDD within 10 days, OCTA must be valid before you drive, and you must check the technical inspection validity. ⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid

The most typical mistakes are buying a car in a hurry without a history check, trusting only the seller's words, skipping the test drive and ignoring hidden costs. Many people also overpay for "convenient" financing without reading the contract terms. 📍 Where and when to buy — place and season

The outcome of a purchase is shaped not only by the specific car but also by the place and the timing. In Riga the supply is the largest and prices the most competitive, but in the regions you can sometimes find a less-driven car at a better price — you just have to factor in the distance for the viewing. The season matters too: in winter convertibles and sports cars are usually cheaper, while SUVs and winter-ready models tend to be better value in summer. If you buy from a dealer, expect a written warranty and transparent pricing; buying from a private seller, more of the responsibility for checking falls on you, but the price is often lower as well.
